Q: I know you’ve been featured on the blog before, but can you re-introduce yourself for the sake of our new readers?

A: I am Kim Kundert, VP of Clinical Operations for Virtrial. Virtrial is using a long-standing proven virtual care platform to transform telehealth in the clinical trial industry. It is an app that we have customized the capabilities to make it simple for patient and clinical trial site use. The technology sits in a secure, cloud-based, HIPAA compliant and HITRUST certified platform.

Q: How Virtrial Works?

A: Virtrial offers a patient management program that combines video, text and email for clinical trial sites to easily, efficiently and conveniently address specific patient and/or study needs. The platform can be used on any device (iOS, Android) and at any site. This allows a portion (25-50%) of in-clinic visits to be replaced with virtual visits.

Q: Can you give us insights into your features?

A: Once the patient app is downloaded onto the patient’s own phone/iPad, the study coordinator will send the patient a link when it is time to connect for a video chat. At the patient’s convenience, they click on the link and are automatically connected to the next available study coordinator. The coordinator can pull in up to 2 more people on the call(for a 4-way call)- most likely a physician, care-giver or interpreter.

Q: Why is now the time for a technology solution like Virtrial?

A: The clinical trial industry continues to struggle with enrolling patients into trials. Only 5% of patients participate in clinical trials, 70% of patients live 2 or more hours to the nearest research site and 30% of patients drop out of a clinical trial after their initial sign-up. The average time to develop a new medication is 10 years at a cost of $19 billion. Something needs to change to improve these statistics. Technology supports virtual solutions in all other facets of the consumer world, why not clinical research.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: Virtrial’s plan for the future include award of a few pilot trials with which to validate the stability, security and functionality of the platform to the clinical trial industry. We plan to hire additional staff in January to support our growth.
